Cole found himself standing on the front porch of Slate and Sophie’s house as nervous as a teenager picking up a girl for their first date. At least he thought this was how it would have felt had he ever had a real date. He never had to ask a girl out in high school because they were all so eager to hookup with one of the boys from the Hell’s Minions MC. Although Cole wasn’t officially with the Minions, he was best friends with the Landry brothers. In fact, they were so close growing up, you rarely saw the Landrys without him.

He rubbed his sweating palms on his jeans—seriously?—then knocked on the door. He held his breath and waited for someone to answer. Before he left town, he would have just walked inside unannounced, like someone who lived there. Now? He wasn’t sure what he should do.

With his heart pounding in his chest, he listened as Kyle and Colt argued over who was going to answer the door. He couldn’t stop the wide grin that split his face from forming at the sound of the two of them arguing. He chuckled to himself and shook his head. Fuck, he’d really missed this. He couldn’t wait for them to open the door.

He heard the locks turning in the door right before Colt jerked it open. His eyes rounded and his jaw hit the floor as he realized it was Cole standing on their front porch. “Cole,” he whispered. “You’re home.” He launched himself at Cole, knocking him back a step. Cole was surprised at how tight the youngest Landry squeezed him. The tension in his shoulders started slipping away as he hugged Colt back.

“Colt, who’s at the door?” The sound of Sophie’s voice calling from inside the house caused his heart to skip a beat. His pulse sped up and he knew there was no way Colt couldn’t feel it. He stepped back, beaming up at Cole and pushed the door open wider so Sophie could see who had come knocking.

“Cole,” Sophie whispered his name. Tears filled her eyes and her hand flew to her mouth.

Colt moved to the side, allowing Cole to enter the house. He closed the door behind him, his sole focus on Sophie and the single tear slipping free and running down her cheek. He prayed that her tears were happy tears. He prayed that she wouldn’t reject him after the way he’d left and for staying gone for so long. If she did, he vowed, he would work his ass off to find a place in her life again, no matter how long it took.

Feeling like a stranger, instead of someone who had been here more than his own place, he stopped just inside the door and waited to see what she did next. He should have known the woman wouldn’t hold a grudge. Her beautiful smile broke across her face as she launched herself at him, knocking him into the door with an “umph.” Taking his face in both of her hands, she pulled him down for a smoldering kiss.
